The Family History Library also holds on microfilm the Annuario delle Diocesi d’Italia (Annals of the Dioceses of Italy), published by the Catholic Church in 1951. See chapter 5 for more on using geographic resources to locate your ancestor’s hometown.

ITALIAN ECCLESIASTICAL RECORD TYPES

There are only a few types of records created by the Catholic Church (often based around the sacraments), and they’re held in ecclesiastical registers (image B). We will describe each one in the sections that follow, along with any challenges or quirks you might encounter within them. Note that, as with Catholic Church records in other countries, Italian church records are generally kept in Latin (though you may find some priests who record in Italian).
